“Why do I have to be the executive producer?” Rayne demanded. “You have far more experience than I do and you’re much better with people.”

“You’re the one Dewey said Flower wanted, and you’re also the only person authorized to distribute funds from the programmable cred she supplied to finance the whole shooting match,” Mouser said. “I doubt anybody else on Bits other than your mother even knows how to use the Stryx register.”

“I never understood how it and the mini-registers can work when we don’t have a tunnel network connection.”

“Stryx creds are their own thing. Supposedly it has something to do with quantum coupling, but I wouldn’t be surprised if that’s just what they tell technologically backward species like ourselves because we can’t prove otherwise.”

“That doesn’t give me a great deal of confidence in Stryx leadership,” Rayne said.

“I don’t buy your idea that they’re pulling the strings on our project,” Mouser said. “I have to believe the Stryx would have better sense than to have appointed me creative director for A Mazing Earth. I think Dewey is following vague instructions from Flower and that’s as far up as it goes.”

“Do you really think the three prototypes that were voted through can be merged with the useful elements from the other teams into one coherent game?”

Mouser shrugged. “I’ve never seen it done before, but if I had to pick a phase in a game’s development to start making major changes, a month in is probably about right. My suggestion is that you name three associate producers and let them do all of the work.”

“What do you think about Tom, Diayu, and Leandra?” Rayne suggested.

“Tom and Diayu’s teams won, so that makes sense, but why Leandra?”

“It couldn’t have been easy to get up there in front of everybody on Bits for half an hour and attempt to show what we would have been seeing if their holographic presentation hadn’t been wiped. It demonstrated she can improvise under pressure.”

“I still can’t believe everybody voted my game into the top three,” Mouser said. “It wasn’t on the merits. I think it must mean that they were so convinced the vote was rigged they decided to play along.”

“People are funny like that,” Rayne said. “We have a subconscious desire to be on the winning side. I’ve been reading more of Earth’s earlier history as background for the twenty-first century. They used to have opinion polling for elections that turned out to influence the outcomes by changing different voting bloc’s motivation to vote.”

“Thanks for reminding me why we left.” Mouser checked his notes before continuing. “By the end of the month you’ll have thousands of people on the payroll so you’re going to need all of the management help you can get. My advice is to stick with finance, pick somebody as co-producer to supervise the overall production, and keep the top people from all of the teams in management positions.”

“I think Delphi’s dad would make the best co-producer,” Rayne said. “He’s old enough to command
